Product Description
WANDERER FANTASY, Op. 15/D. 760 was composed in 1822 by Franz Schubert (1797–1828) at a moment when he was experimenting boldly with large-scale forms, virtuoso writing, and cyclic unity; its thematic material is drawn from his own song DeR WANDERER, D. 489. Conceived originally as a demanding work for solo piano, Schubert famously remarked that "the devil may play it," acknowledging its formidable technical challenges. Franz Liszt (1811–1886), who revered Schubert's music, later created an orchestration of the fantasy in the 1850s, transforming its four connected movements into a dramatic, symphonic structure that highlights the work's underlying cohesion and amplifies its heroic character. While Schubert's original piano version has long been recognized as one of the cornerstones of the Romantic virtuoso repertory, Liszt's orchestration, though performed less frequently, has gained renewed attention for its imaginative treatment and for offering a rare glimpse of Schubert through Liszt's symphonic lens. Today the WANDERER FANTASY remains celebrated for its innovation, power, and visionary continuity, standing as one of Schubert's most influential large-scale instrumental works.
